New study on pesticide toxicity lacks scientific credibility

A recent study entitled “Major pesticides are more toxic to human cells than their declared active principles”, conducted by Gilles-Eric Séralini and a team of French scientists claims to demonstrate that co-formulants present in pesticides increase the toxicity of plant protection products to humans.

However, the design of the study and the testing model and methods employed by the researchers have been strongly criticised for failing to meet all the basic standards relevant to scientific research. This was highlighted in a statement issued by the European Crop Protection Association which can be accessed here.

Furthermore, the European Commission came to a similar conclusion and does not see a need for a “crisis-intervention”, as stated by a spokesperson for DG Health and Consumers. A media report outlining the European Commission’s response to the study can be found here.
